Engaging with younger locals

In connection with the development of projects in Poland, OX2 is engaging with the younger generation around cross generational issues.

Climate change and biodiversity loss are defining challenges of our time. They didn’t happen overnight and cannot be solved that way either. These are cross-generational issues, as their causes, impacts, and solutions span multiple generations. The younger generation of today will both experience the impacts of the global challenges and play an important role in overcoming these complex and long-lasting challenges. We believe that this makes it important to include them in biodiversity initiatives.

In several of our Polish projects, OX2 has chosen to engage with the younger members of the local communities regarding these cross-generational issues. Together with the local schools and the city offices, OX2 has co-organized workshops and events aiming at increasing awareness and engagement around biodiversity, while informing the kids about OX2’s wind farm project in the area. These events provide an opportunity to be approachable for questions that they may have - questions they have every right to receive answers to.

Seeing seeds turn into a meadow

As part of OX2's awareness-raising activities, school kids got to plant meadow seeds outside of their school. Now, when the kids go to school, they will see the seeds grow into a flower meadow, and pollinating insects navigating in between the flowers and the insect hotels.

Making huts for animals

When constructing the Wysoka wind farm, some trees had to be taken down. These were compensated elsewhere, and additional trees were planted to achieve a positive impact. Together with a local carpenter, wood from thew felled trees were used to make huts for animals.

These huts have been used to engage with kids in the local community, for example during National Hedgehog Day and as part of an awareness campaign around biodiversity. The kids got to take them home to place them on trees in their garden or in the vicinity to their home. Hopefully, they will get to observe bird coming there to nest in years to come.

On Polish National Hedgehog Day in 2023, OX2 visited a local primary school to educate and inspire children about biodiversity in general and about the amazing world of hedgehogs in particular.

Facts:

  • Animal huts can provide stable temperatures, a safe place for rest and nesting.
  • Hedgehogs and birds are important regulating pests, reducing the needs for pesticides.
