Agrivoltaics (Agri-PV)

Combining agriculture with solar power generation is an innovative approach that brings benefits to the local farming community, provides sustainable agriculture, and accelerates the transition to clean energy. The concept is called agrivoltaics, or more simply agri-PV (agriculture + photovoltaics), and in short involves installing solar panels on pasture or arable farmland.

Agri-PV can be configured in different ways, depending on what structures and solar modules are used, and in combination with all sorts of agriculture. OX2’s focus is on agriculture that has the best fit with, and benefit from, standard solar systems. We believe we can contribute to a large-scale energy transition while at the same time improve farming conditions.

Fixed angle or solar tracking panels

In our systems, the panels are installed with a fixed angle or on a movable axis that follows the path of the sun. The height of the panels and the space between the panel rows is adapted to the type of agriculture and machinery to be used, with special control features to ease passage or access. During planning, we work closely with the farmer and the local community to make sure the system is optimized to local conditions.

The panels provide shade for crops as well as livestock, and the dual land use means that the farm contributes to both renewable energy and sustainable food production. There are studies which show that harvests increase, water consumption decreases, especially in drought areas, and the animals’ welfare increase when agriculture is combined with solar energy.

OX2 and Agrivoltaics (Agri-PV)

Approximately 1.5 GW in agri-PV development

We have built a substantial portfolio of large scale agri-PV projects, ranging in a mix of livestock such as sheep and cows, to crop systems such as olive trees, forage, vegetables, leguminous and more. All depending on the local circumstances. Our agri-PV projects are located in France, Italy and Australia.

Fully integrated design from agriculture to PV system

Designing an agri-PV system involves detailed simulations on PV system climatic impact, analysis of crop or livestock response, agricultural management, and agriculture business with our regular PV system design work.

Regional adaptations

Regional variations are key to a successful project, including selection of crops, or livestock, as well as local agriculture business conditions, incentive schemes and legislation requirements. Our local teams are in close cooperation with our cross-market agri-PV experts and PV design teams.

Sustainable agriculture and competitive energy production

The backbone of our work is to accelerate access to renewable energy, while also assuring a sustainable and efficient agriculture. Through agri-PV, land does not become a constraint to the energy transition.
